Planning on getting married in Portadown?

Are you planning on getting married in Portadown? These are some of my wedding resources in Portadown, Lurgan, and Craigavon in County Armagh. Some wedding resources in town that you might find useful are the venue and entertainment in Portadown, which may be helpful to brides and grooms in the neighbouring towns Lurgan and Armagh. Let’s start with most likely the first thing you consider when planning.

I’ve compiled a list of wedding resources in Portadown and put these into sections. I hope you find this useful if you are considering or planning to get married in town. You can also have your ceremony in town and go elsewhere for the reception, or on the other hand, have your ceremony outside of the town and have your evening reception in or as close to Portadown as possible.

Wedding Venues: Even though there is only one venue in Portadown, you are not limited to this venue as there are a couple of other wedding venues within a short distance from the town, including a hall, Newforge House, a Castle and a Barn. You can check out my wedding venues for further information. A hotel is the only venue in town, but there are some alternatives too, like golf clubs, possibly pubs and bars, or other places that might have a large function room if the budget is very tight. A couple of pubs are The Head O The Road in the Tartaraghan area, a short distance from the Birches and Peatlands Park, so it is quite a popular bar, as you’d expect.

There are other alternative venues you can consider, perhaps thinking out of the box like a golf club, a social club or possibly a restaurant. Probably these would be better for smaller type weddings, certainly not for 100 guests, which wouldn’t be practical. There are a couple of small churches scattered about Portadown, including two on Moy Road and Scotch Street that might be able to help with your wedding, called The Parochial House and Scotch Street Gospel Hall.

Wedding Suits for Men

Let’s look at wedding suits for men. There are quite a few shops in the town that might suit you and the groomsmen. The groom, best man, groomsmen and father of the bride can consider some shops in town, including JR McMahon Exclusive Menswear, SD Kells Portadown and Statement Menswear in Portadown. The lads want great-looking suits that they might want to try on in the shops rather than ordering online, which could work out due to fitting problems.

Statement Menswear

Statement Menswear in Portadown is a high-quality men’s clothes shop that doesn’t cover wedding suits and attire but is also more casual. They have plenty of high-end clothes from the likes of Herbie Frogg and Lacuzzo.

…enough good things about these Lads. They sorted us out for all the Tux’s for my wedding. Dealt with last-minute changes from some of the party brilliantly. Thanks again for all the help… I also

… used statement menswear for my wedding, and the experience was fantastic, there was a great selection of suits and very good customer service. Any problems or issues I had were dealt with very quickly and professionally. I dealt mostly with the two Glenn's, their experience and advice were invaluable and very good craic also. I would highly recommend…

JR McMahon

This is another men’s shop in the town that caters for men’s suits and attire for weddings. Located at the bottom of the town. The shop supplies high-end brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Strellson, Eden Park, Remus Uomo, Bugatti, Calvin Klein, Eterna, Sand and Meyer with Loake.

…professional and non-judgemental service today for my son’s wedding outfit. Thrilled with it all, from start to finish. Thank you. Bought my two sons’ first suits here years ago. Service is still as superb. And only the finest choice of stock…

…today I need a new outfit for a wedding. I've never had someone measure and fit me for a suit or outfit before, and as a result, I thought suits just didn't suit me. Firstly, the store was extremely well stocked, the mannequins were well presented, and from them, I was able to tell Richard (who was assisting me) what styles I liked. Immediately, he had 3 or 4 options for me to try with different combos of waistcoats, ties and shoes. He was patient, offering advice and opinions as I tried various combinations until I settled on the one. Having thought suits just didn't suit me, I've been converted. I realise I've been wearing ill-fitting suits all this time, and the difference between my new purchase is night and day. I'm sure a suit is just a suit to some people, but the experience and expertise that Richard, John and the team can offer in putting together combinations to fit awkward body shapes…

Bridal

There are several bridal shops you can check out in County Armagh. Some of these are.

Chantilly Lace

Chantilly Lace in Lurgan is the first. The shop sells bridal boutique sizes 6-36+, curvy bride collection, bridesmaids dept, juniors, veils and formals.

Marriage Registration

Marriage registration in Portadown is at ABC, which is the council and can be at Craigavon Civic Centre. You need to give 28 minimum days’ notice, this is important. Ideally, it should be 8-10 weeks. First, let’s look at what you need to do or check before getting married.

Legal Requirements

To marry, you and your partner must be:

  1. Aged 18 years old or above on the day of your wedding (consent is needed if either party are aged 16 or 17 years old)

  2. Unrelated to one another in a way that would prevent you from getting married

  3. Free to marry, for example, neither of you are already married or in a civil partnership

  4. Capable of understanding the nature of a marriage ceremony and of consenting to the marriage

What you need

All documents must be originals (not photocopied) and, if not in English, accompanied by a certified translation. These documents must be produced when giving notice. The Registrar must see documents that prove your age, nationality and identity as follows:

  1. A full birth certificate (long version) showing parents details

  2. Passport or National Identity Card

  3. If you are a widow, widower or surviving civil partner, the death certificate of your former spouse or civil partner

  4. If divorced, a decree is absolute or a dissolution of civil partnership certificate. Please note a decree nisi is not acceptable

  5. If reverted to the maiden name – the last marriage certificate must be produced

Consent: If you are aged 16 or 17 years, a consent form will need to be completed. This is available from Registrar. If you are a non-EEA citizen, visit the NI Direct website for further information on the requirements for getting married in Northern Ireland and Immigration Control.

You can have your ceremony in Craigavon civic centre, church, chapel or the venue (if allowed to). There are a few churches and chapels in the town and just outside, too, as St John the Baptist Catholic Church is on Garvaghy Road and St Patrick Church is situated on William Street. Below are just a few examples, as there are a few more not mentioned.

Portadown Churches

There are lots of Portadown Churches in town for your wedding ceremony, as you can have your protestant ceremony at Edenderry Presbyterian Church, Edenderry Memorial Methodist Church, Portadown Elim Church, St Columba's Church, Church of Ireland, First Portadown Presbyterian, St Patrick's, Portadown Baptist Church, Portadown Presbyterian Church, Drumcree Church and St Mark’s.

St Columba's Church

St Columba's Church is located on Loughgall Road it was formed in 1964 to serve the Edgartown community and has expanded all over Portadown, and I’m sure it welcomes people from outside the church to come along. The parish was formed in its own right within the Church of Ireland. The church is an Anglican Parish.

St Marks

Most churches are very close to the town centre, and St Mark is at the top of the town centre, which I am showing the outside of below. As it’s at the top of the town it’s perhaps the most well-known. The church would be great for your wedding ceremony. The rector is Reverand Will Orr, who has been at the church since 2016. The curate is Reverand Lucy Burden, who joined the church a year later in 2017.

Edenderry Memorial Methodist Church

Brooke and Scott’s ceremony was in Edenderry Memorial Methodist Church, which is about 10 minutes outside of the town centre. The ceremony took about 45 minutes, and there were plenty of hymn signings and prayers. The signing of the marriage registration was in the back room and then back out into the church.

Seagoe Parish Church

Seagoe Parish Church is in the Seagoe area of the town, which is very handy to the motorway and Northlink. The parish centre is right beside the church and offers coffee mornings as well as various other things to do with the church. Sometimes, there are also craft fairs here, with proceedings going towards church funds. The ceremony is just over the road.

Chapels

There are a couple of chapels in the town where you can also have your catholic ceremony, including St Patrick’s Church, Portadown and St. John The Baptist Catholic Church. St Patrick’s Church is in William Street just off the town centre.

St. John The Baptist Catholic Church

The chapel St John The Baptist Catholic Church, also called Our Parish of Drumcree, is popular with residents in the Garvaghy estate and people who live on the Loughgall Road and further out onto the Red Lion Road. Senior Briege McKenna and Father Pablo Escriva De Romani conduct the ceremonies.

Wedding Venue

You can, of course, have your ceremony in the actual venue itself if it is legally allowed to. This would make an alternative to a church or chapel as above, or perhaps this is what you want in the first place.

Wedding Entertainment

Wedding entertainment could be a key part of your day, and if you have the budget for it, I’d recommend something to entertain the guests on the day. Entertainment throughout the day may not be essential, though, as guests are chatting to other guests. Some examples could be a singing waiter (the type that falls over and starts singing to the amazement of onlookers), a kids entertainer and a caricature.

Wedding DJ

There are a couple of wedding DJs in the town and not too far away, including DJ Hursty, My Wedding DJ NI and Party DJ NI. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many in the town itself unless they work on a part-time basis, so you may have to look further afield or find an alternative, you can read further in my blog, Wedding DJs in NI.

Wedding Cars

There are a couple of companies that you can hire Wedding Cars in Portadown from. Usually, they pick you up before the ceremony and stay with you until after they leave you at the reception venue. So it is a set period as you don’t need to hire a car for all day, usually. They will generally have a lot of cars, including the Bentley, VW, limo or a more vintage car. Some offer unique cars that may suit you better. You will need to check with the individual car hire companies themselves.

Some of Wedding Car companies include

  1. Diamond Elite

  2. I Do Wedding Cars

  3. Luxury Chauffeur

Wedding Services

There are plenty of wedding services in Craigavon you can check out when organising and getting ready for your big day.

  1. Wedding Planner

  2. Wedding Dress Shop

Wedding Resources

There is a new Facebook group called Wedding Help NI, which you are free to join and participate in. This is if you are looking for suppliers. There are plenty of shops you can try on and purchase your wedding rings. The downside of buying online is you can’t try your wedding ring on, so a shop in town would be much better as they may be able to adjust the ring to your size of finger. There are lots of wedding rings, including vintage, diamond, and rose gold. If you are just engaged, have you thought of a custom engagement ring? The shops also cater for men’s wedding rings, and some offer a discount to make the price a little cheaper.
